Man pulls tree down
Beware. Graphic photos. A pair of unidentified "old timers" felled a pine tree along Vermillion Street in Athens Thursday. It appears the men first climbed the tree to prune branches and possibly cut off the top. This is speculation because our reporter did not arrive on the scene until the men were well into attacking the tree near its base. They cut V shapes with a chainsaw and then drove in wedges until the tree was so weak it could no longer support itself. While the apparent mastermind continued driving in the wedge and intermittently breaking out the chainsaw in a plot to bring the tree down, his accomplice took to the street with a strong (but pretty) blue rope that was tied off near the top of the tree. And, he began to pull. The affair turned into an outright lynching. Neighbors volunteered to step out into the street to stop traffic, we speculate to avoid the added carnage of crushed vehicles. Appropriately, a group of four skateboarders took seats on a wall across the road and began cheering the men in the midst of their violence. "It is coming down," said the spike driver. And, the rope man pulled harder. There was a sudden crack, a whoosh, a thud, and then a brief silence.
Apparently not satisfied at having reduced the tree to a stump, the spike man raced out into the street with his chainsaw. He fired it up and quickly cut the tree into smaller pieces. The motive for this act is unknown. A tree is dead. It probably deserved what it got. The neighbors were entertained and a few motorists were inconvenienced. |
