Lindsay Rumburg reigns in shot put

PikeView High School Junior Lindsay Rumburg won the West Virginia State Shot Put Championship for the third year running Friday.

And, she placed second in the discus. Nobody was surprised.

Going into the meet, Rumburg said she felt her chances were good to win the shot put. She estimated she would place fourth in the discus.

Rumburg is modest about her accomplishments. The truth is the ability to throw the shot put just comes naturally. Rumburg stunned everyone her freshman year in High School when she won the first time. Since then, she has been the favorite in every meet and she has never faltered.

Rumburg is bluntly honest. She works hard but has had little coaching. There are not many shot put coaches in southern West Virginia. Ironically, she has learned most of her technique watching the competition she dominates.

The junior admits she could improve in both events, especially in the discus, with the help of an experienced mentor.

Watching Rumburg is a joy. There is no show. She doesn't take many practice attempts. Other than the fact that the other competitors know Rumburg always wins, she just blends into the field. When she performs, there is no wasted movement. She crouches, spins, springs, and lets the put fly without a sound or grimace. The action appears effortless.

The difference is in the flight of the put. It simply goes farther.

While she does not talk about it, Rumburg fans love to speculate on her success. Everyone agrees she is a gifted athlete. She is strong and agile. And, she has a great attitude.
