Bramwell Millionaires

The Spring Tour of Homes in Bramwell, WV, marks the beginning of a string of events expected to draw thousands of Visitors.

Known as the historic town of coal barons, mine operators, and bankers during the heyday of mining in the Pocahontas Coalfields, Bramwell has no coal industry millionaires today. But this town does retain the heritage they left behind including many historic, mansion style, homes.

Set on the edge of the coalfields, a few miles west of Pinnacle Rock State Park, Bramwell is blessed by nature. The Bluestone River snakes through the heart of the town, which butts against the foot of Coaldale Mountain.

The resulting reality isn't exactly the image conjured. The town was once prosperous but that time is long past. People have fallen in love with Bramwell. They are rebuilding the images of this past but it is work in progress.

Tourism is coming and each year it grows. With every season, a new reason to visit this town, seems to blossom. A few years ago, the Train Depot was built anew as a museum. New businesses have opened in the heart of town. Homes have been restored.

During the Spring of 2005 Tour of Homes, stops included the Presbyterian Church, Goodwill House, E.S. Baker House, Thomas House, Hewitt House, Jaris Collins House, Perry House, Bank of Bramwell, Masonic Temple and the Heritage Depot/Museum.

One partaker of the tour said she was excited to discover that one of the homes included in the tour may have been designed by the late architect Frank Lloyd Wright. "I believe it was the Hewitt House on South River Street," she added.

Entertainment will continue in the upcoming months. The Bramwell Theatre Corporation is sponsoring the Sixth Annual Bramwell Theatre Festival.

Smoke on the Mountain will play at the Bramwell Wesleyan Church June 9-26 , Thursday through Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.

Pump Boys and Dinettes will be performed at the Bramwell Masonic Lodge July 7-17, Thursday through Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.

A special event will also be held on July 4th with folk singer, storyteller, musician John McCutchen in Concert at the Bramwell Presbyterian Church.

Tickets for all events are $15. Call (304)589-0246 for reservations, tickets, or information.
