Holy Bull sire, Giacomo, wins Derby! Giacomo, a 50-1 longshot, sprinted past all the favorites to capture the 131st "run for the roses." The order of finish behind Giacomo was Closing Argument (another long shot at 72-1), Afleet Alex, Don't Get Mad, Buzzards Bay, Wilko, Bellamy Road, Andromeda's Hero, Flower Alley, High Fly, Greeley's Galaxy, Coin Silver, Greater Good, Noble Causeway, Sun King, Spanish Chestnut, Sort It Out, Going Wild, Bandini and High Limit. The next triple crown event for Giacomo and company is the Preakness on May 21, followed by the Belmont Stakes on June 11. Giacomo's owners took home a record purse of more than $1.6 million. The take last year was $1 million. Total prize money to be awarded to the 2005 Derby field exceeded $2.3 million.
