Capital dome covered with white stuff?

An unidentified individual in the vicinity of the Capital said the dome is being repaired due to damage caused to the gold leafing by acid rain. She said the rain reacted with the leafing. A new acid rain gold leafing mixture will be used to correct the problem, she explained.

According to the Executive Budget for the State of West Virginia: $2 million of the division's nonappropriated Special Revenue will be used for ongoing investigations to assess structureal damage to the dome. Structural Damage to the lantern will result in major repair work; the base of the dome is damaged and will require repair workbefore the gold leafing can be completed.

This is what the dome looked like last summer.
